The Eastern Florida State College women’s volleyball team lost to Daytona State College in straight sets in the Citrus Conference opener Saturday
The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team lost the Citrus Conference opener at home Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Leyre Arroyo Sanchez had a school-record 24 kills in the match, but Daytona State College defeated the No. 13 ranked Titans in three sets, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23 at Titan Field House.
Arroyo Sanchez had some big kills to keep Eastern Florida State close including her final one that gave the Titans a 22-21 lead but it was the Falcons that came up with the big blocks and kills throughout the match.
All three sets were tight as the first set was tied 23-23 and the Titans actually had set point but an error and then a kill by Kiali Olivier gave Daytona State College the lead and a Abana Teran kill won the first set.
In the second set, the Titans held a six-point lead at 18-12 but Daytona State College made a run and the match was tied at 21-21. Daytona State College would win four of the final six points to take a 2-0 lead.
Daytona State led for much of the third set but a kill from Arroyo Sanchez tied things 13-13 and things would get close once again as the match was tied 23-23 before kills from Teran and Olivier ended the match.
It is the second time this season Arroyo Sanchez has had 20-plus kills in a match. The freshman broke the record previously set by the trio of Selena Newell, Mariah Lewis and her against Snow College in the season opener.
Jordyn Cox finished with eight kills and Angelis Figueroa had 18 digs.
Eastern Florida State College will look to rebound next Saturday afternoon when they host Hillsborough Community College at Titan Field House. The match will begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
