The Eastern Florida State College women's volleyball team fell short against No. 5 Utah State-Eastern in the final match of the FSW Tournament Saturday in Fort Myers.
The Titans battled the Golden Eagles to a fifth set, falling 25-19, 24-26, 25-21 and 15-9 to finish the tournament 3-1.
Eastern Florida State College got off to a strong start as Jordyn Cox had seven kills and Leyre Arroyo Sanchez had six in the first set. Angelis Figueroa had an ace to make it 23-15 but Utah State-Eastern made a run to cut it to 24-19 before the Titans won it.
The second set saw Utah State-Eastern score five straight points to take a 13-11 lead. But a Cox kill would tie things 14-14 and and it stayed close until the end when Utah State-Eastern scored two straight points to tie things up.
It looked like Utah State-Eastern would roll as they took a 10-4 lead in the third set but the Titans responded, scoring seven of the next eight points to tie things 11-11 on an Arroyo Sanchez kill. The Titans continued its strong play and another Arroyo Sanchez kill made it 17-13. Diara Gaye had a kill to finish the third set, giving the Titans a 25-21 win and a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was tight throughout until a Utah State-Eastern run gave them a four-point edge and they held it to force a fifth set.
In the fifth set Utah State-Eastern continued to play well to pick up the win.
Arroyo Sanchez finished with 18 kills and 10 digs while Cox had 16 kills and 10 digs for the Titans.
Eastern Florida State College will be home for the first time on Tuesday evening for a 6 p.m. match against St. Petersburg College at Titan Field House. Admission is free and you can watch the match live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
