Women's tennis team has good first day in Texas
The Eastern Florida State College women’s tennis team got off to a good start on Day 1 of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament
The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team got off to a good start on Day 1 of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Tyler, Texas.
The Titans won all three singles matches as well as the doubles match and scored eight team points on the first day of competition.
Laura Yans picked up a win at No. 1 singles to advance to the round of 16. Yans defeated Coastal Alabama's Emily Grubach in the first round 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday. She will face Northwest Mississippi's Macarena Arisio who also won on Saturday. Yans and Arisio will play at 8 a.m. Sunday.
At No. 2 singles Elena Martinez Prado also picked up a win in the first round, defeating Morgan Keefe of Southwestern Illinois 6-0, 6-0. Prado will face Jones College's Molly Bennett who also won 6-0, 6-0, Sunday at 8 a.m.
Thais Mitlmeier defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast's Lauren Sullivan 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 on Sunday. Mitlmeier will play Theresa Emelio of Jones College at 9:15 a.m. Sunday.
Maria Gento, who had a bye in the first round, will play Hinds Community College's Camila Mordiz who won Saturday in straight sets in the round of 16 on Sunday. Also starting on Sunday will be Sara Valentina Ladino and Dasha Moskalenko. Ladino had a bye at No. 5 singles and will play Hinds Community College's Tierney Cronin at 10:30 a.m. Moskalenko had a bye at No. 6 singles and will open Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Iowa Central's Patricia Sazambile.
The Titans came back in the afternoon session and the No. 1 doubles team of Gento and Prado picked up a win 6-0, 6-1 against Wallace State's Sophia Baillos and Noelle D'Angelillo. Gento and Prado advance to the round of 16 where they will play Mississippi Gulf Coast's Valeria Callejo and Danique Vermue at 11:45 a.m.
The No. 2 doubles team of Mitlmeier and Moskalenko had a bye and will play Sunday against Pratt Community College's Sandra Dominguez and Barbara Mattar at 11:45 a.m.
The No. 3 doubles team of Ladino and Yans will also open on Sunday at 1 p.m., facing Jones College's Ansley Tomkins and Josie Tullos.
Jones College scored 16 points on the first day with Wallace State in second with 14 points.
