Softball team opens national tournament with a win
The Eastern Florida State College softball team made history Monday night at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, defeating Trinity Valley Community College for their first win in the national tournament
The Eastern Florida State College softball team made history Monday night at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Oxford, Alabama.
The ninth-seeded Titans defeated No. 8 seed Trinity Valley Community College 2-1 in the first round of the national tournament at Choccolocco Park.
Sophomore Avery Velazquez was on top of her game once again on the mound, allowing just two hits in the victory. Velazquez retired the first 11 hitters she faced in the game.
Scoreless after three innings, Avery Velazquez led off the inning with a walk and then with one out, she would steal second base for her first stolen base of the season. Madison Velazquez hit a single up the middle to put runners on first and third. Madison Velazquez advanced to second on a groundout bringing up freshman Avery Helms.
Helms singled to right field that scored Avery Velazquez and pinch runner Martha Jones.
Down 2-0, Kenzie Hess cut the lead in half with a solo home run with two outs.
From there, Avery Velazquez retired the next eight hitters before Clarissa Valdez reached on a bloop single.
Kerissa Howell ended the game with a catch in left field to clinch the victory.
Helms, Madison Velazquez and Avery Velazquez each had two hits in the win. Avery Velazquez finished with three strikeouts and did not walk a hitter.
Eastern Florida State College will get a day off and will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. EST.
