Softball team splits conference doubleheader at Daytona State
The Eastern Florida State College softball team split a Citrus Conference doubleheader on the road Tuesday, losing a tight first game 5-4 and then beat No. 21 Daytona State College 7-2 in the second game
The Eastern Florida State College softball team split a Citrus Conference doubleheader on the road Tuesday.
The No. 11 Titans lost a tight first game 5-4 and then beat No. 21 Daytona State College 7-2 in the second game.
The first game was scoreless through the first three innings but the Titans struck for three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Emma George led off with a single, Aracelis Jimenez reached on an infield single and two were on. Isabel Otero drove in the first run on a ground ball and then Annalyn Duncan hit an RBI double. Duncan would then score on Jaelynne Whipple's sacrifice fly.
Daytona State College would get one back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly. A couple of defensive miscues would lead to three runs by Daytona State College. The Falcons led 4-3 heading to the seventh inning but Whipple tied the game with a solo home run to centerfield.
But Daytona State College would score in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the win, 5-4.
George had two hits in the loss.
After over an hour delay between games due to an ump injury, the Titans put together a two-out rally in the top of the first inning as Duncan singled and scored on an errant throw.
A perfect bunt with runners on second and third gave Daytona State College a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
But the Titans finished strong, scoring two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Duncan reached on an error and scored on a Avery Velazquez triple. Velazquezz would score on a Madison Velazquez single. In the sixth, Martha Jones pinch hit and hit a single. Avery Velazquez would drive in the fifth run with a double and score on Duncan's double. Brooklyn Scott had an RBI single.
Avery Velazquez picked up the win in a complete game effort. Duncan had two hits and reached all four times she came up.
Eastern Florida State College is now tied for third place in the standings with Indian River State College at 21-11. The Titans will be back home Saturday afternoon for a conference doubleheader against St. Petersburg College beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free and fans can watch the doubleheader live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
