Eastern Florida's men's golf team got off to a good start on the first day of the 72-hole NJCAA District 4 Tournament on Monday at Brewton Country Club in Brewton, Alabama.
The Titans lead the 12-team field thanks to their 36-hole total of 297-291=588. Wallace State is second at 595. Central Alabama is third at 596.
Individually Eastern Florida's Mathieu Echelard is tied for first at 70-74=144. Bradley Bawden is tied for fourth at 73-72=145. Fraser Davren shot 77-72=149; Michael Stewart 77-76=153 and Tyler Bennett 78-73=151.
"It was a good job by the guys today," said Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell. "The course played difficult all day. Fast bouncy conditions on the fairways and the greens are bumpy and demanding.
"Mathieu and Brad both played solid and good comebacks by Tyler and Fraser this afternoon.
"Tomorrow will be a good test for everyone."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday. The top six finishing teams advance to the Buffalo Dunes in Garden City, Kansas for the May 16-19 national tournament.
The Titans have advanced to the national tournament for 14 straight seasons under Howell and have won six district championships, three in the last four years. They also won seven national championships under head coach Floyd Horgen, the most recent in 1991.
The Titans also have produced seven individual national champions, the most recent being Kerry Sweeney who won it last May at Duran Golf Club in Viera. Sweeney joined Jacob Davis, 2004, and Billy Anderson, 2011, as Howell-coached individual national champions. Howell also has coached 22 All-Americans.
The Titans best national team finish under Howell was second in 2015.
