Titans Golfers Sign to Play at NCAA Division I Colleges

Eastern Florida sophomore men's golfers Corey Herman and Kerry Sweeney will continue their careers at NCAA Division I institutions.

Herman, from St. Cloud, Florida and Harmony High, has signed to play at Coastal Carolina. Sweeney, from Melbourne, Florida and Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, signed to play at Mississippi.

In 2015 Sweeney won the 2015 Jack Nicklaus Award as the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Collegiate Player of the Year at the NJCAA level and the Phil Mickelson Award Presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in NJCAA Division I Men's Golf.

Sweeney also was a first team PING and first team NJCAA All-American honoree.

This spring Sweeney and Herman and their teammates will compete in the NJCAA Division I National Championship tournament May 16-20 at Duran Golf Club in Viera after winning their third District 4 title in the last four seasons.

The national tournament appearance will be the 14th straight for the Titans who finished second last spring. Sweeney finished tied for second individually with then-teammate Mickey DeMorat who is now playing at NCAA Division I Liberty University. Herman finished tied for 48th.

For head coach Jamie Howell the parting is part of the process.

"The hardest part of the job is turning them loose," said Howell. "I only get them for two years. You have two years to help mold them, prepare them for what's coming next. You'd love to believe when they leave here they will take their experiences here with them.

"I'm more proud of the fact that they find their way, whether it's Division I, II or III. Not everybody is cut out to be a Division I student-athlete in any sport. I'm a firm believer in wherever you end up is where you belong."
