Eastern Florida State College men's golf coach Jamie Howell and former player Kerry Sweeney will be inducted into the 2018 Space Coast Hall of Fame on Friday, May 11 at the Cocoa Beach Country Club.
Howell, who will be inducted in the college coaching category, has led the Titans to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament in each of the 16 seasons as head coach, placing second and third in the nation. His Titans will compete for a national title May 15-18 in Lubbock, Texas.
Overall, Howell's teams have won 43 tournaments and three players have won individual national championship titles and 23 players have been named All-Americans. He was named the Dave Williams National Coach of the year in 2015 and was a finalist for the award in 2016. In both 2015 and 2016, Howell was named Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). He has additionally been named NJCAA District 4 Coach of the Year seven times in his career.
Sweeney was one of the three players to win a national title with the Titans and is currently paying for the University of Mississippi. The Holy Trinity High graduate will be inducted into the college category. As a member of the Titans, Sweeney was named first team NJCAA All-American, won the NJCAA Jack Nicklaus Award in both 2015 and 2016 and has had a solid career at Ole Miss.
Alex Powers, who is the color commentator for televised softball games at Eastern Florida State College, will be inducted into the college category. After a successful career at Eau Gallie High School, she went to Florida State College and earned a spot on the college World Series All-Tournament Team. She was also selected All-ACC First Team, NFCA All-Region First Team and ACC Player of the Year in her junior season. Powers' senior season was just as impressive, having earned NFCA All-American honors for the second straight year.
Commemorative portraits of each Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee are on display in the gymnasium halls on the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College.
